It’s November, And You Know What That Means; It’s Movember!
Most Australians are familiar with the annual month-long event of Movember, encouraging men to grow their moustaches. However, many may not know why it is such an important event to be a part of.
Movember aims to “change the face of men’s health,” through raising awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.
Through the clever and fun engagement of men across the nation, Movember seeks to increase early detection in such health issues, ultimately reducing the number of preventable deaths. Besides the annual health check-ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of any family history of cancer, and to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Of course, with the importance of this month, we would like to share some alarming statistics from the Australian Government – Cancer Australia.
- The estimated number of new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in 2018 is 17,729 male
- The estimated number of deaths from prostate cancer in 2018 is 3,500 males, and
- In 2018, testicular cancer is estimated to be the 19th most commonly diagnosed cancer among males.
